Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Reactor

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Reactor

A supercritical CO2 reactor is a high-pressure sealed vessel that uses supercritical CO2 (temperature >31.1 °C, pressure >7.38 MPa, where CO2 exhibits both gas‑like and liquid‑like properties) as the reaction medium. Its core functions are precise temperature and pressure control to provide a stable environment for chemical reactions. The reactor body is typically made of corrosion‑resistant alloys to suit various reaction needs.

This reactor is widely used in chemical synthesis, pharmaceutical extraction, and materials preparation. Taking advantage of the high diffusivity and low viscosity of supercritical CO2, it improves reaction efficiency and allows easy product separation without the need for organic solvents, aligning with green chemistry principles. It is a key piece of equipment for clean production and advanced chemical synthesis.

Supercritical drying is a method of removing solvent and not causing surface tension effects. As the liquid evaporates, surface tension can drag small structures in the solid, causing the solid to twist or shrink. Under supercritical conditions, there is no surface tension and removal ofsupercritical fluid does not affect the shape of the solid. Supercritical drying is used to make aerogels, drying some easily damaged materials, such as archaeological samples or samples for electron microscopy tests.
